Laptop & Notebook Computers – How to Choose a Laptop or Notebook Computer

Recently, I decided to buy my own laptop as the portability and mobility advantages of having my own became more attractive.

So, with great enthusiasm and anticipation, I went to the Internet to help me decide. I thought I would make up my mind quickly. Unfortunately, it took quite a while before I found the one laptop to satisfy my needs and preferences. The main reason was the quantity and variety of information (both commercial and technical) I was presented with on the Internet.

I hope the rest of this article helps you in your quest and saves you valuable time in finding the laptop most suitable to you.

Decide on what features you need:

Before you embark on your quest via the Internet, I suggest you make notes of your preferred features and the reason for them. This will allow you to focus and will greatly help you to save time on your searches.

An important factor to consider is upgradeability. While the laptop you choose may be ideal for your current requirements you may (or will) have a need to upgrade. You do not want to invest in a laptop which you may have to sell or discard within a relatively short time because you need more.

The two most important factors to consider in upgradeability are memory (RAM) and hard disk space. For some laptops you can also upgrade the CPU.

These are the important features you will need to consider:

  • The CPU (Processor)
  • The memory (RAM)
  • The hard disk (HDD)
  • The screen
  • Other feaures such as mobile computing capabilities (wireless etc...)

Read on for more details on these features.

The CPU (Processor):

This is the engine that will drive your laptop's performance. Ideally you should choose the fastest CPU available. CPU speed is measured in GHz (e.g. 1.6 GHz, 1.8 GHz, and 2.0 GHz or more). However, this will depend on your budget and what you will use the laptop for. Generally, normal tasks such as email, Word Processing and surfing the Internet do not require a fast CPU. Processing complex spreadsheets, playing games and using other CPU intensive applications will offer better performance with a fast CPU.

The latest CPUs fall into 3 categories. These are the single core CPUs, Core Duo (Intel), Core 2 Duo (Intel) and X2 (e.g. Turion 64 X2) for AMD processors.

The Core Duo, Core 2 Duo and AMD X2 CPUs are better suited for multi tasking/processing. This usually means you will get better performance if you are burning a DVD while processing your complex Spreadsheet or playing games. The processing load will be shared across 2 CPUs. In the case of a single core CPU, only 1 CPU will be handling the requirements of multi tasks.

Note that the Intel Core 2 Duo and the AMD X2 processors are 64 bit compatible. The other 32 bit processors can address memory (RAM) up to about 4 Gigabytes while the 64 bit CPUs will address memory up to about 16 Gigabytes. To make use of the 64 bit capabilities you must run 64 bit operating systems and software. However most laptops these days will only take a maximum of 4 Gigabytes of memory. Budget permitting (there usually is not a big price difference), go for the 64 bit processors so you will have the choice of running 32 bit or 64 bit. Microsoft Windows XP and Vista have 64 bit versions. I understand 64 bit processing may offer performance improvements. However, there is a lot of literature on the Web about this subject. See the following http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit for some technical info.

The Memory (RAM):

The on board memory is another important feature (the more the better). Not having enough memory will significantly affect your laptop's performance. A recommended minimum nowadays is 1 Gigabyte of memory. Consider that Windows Vista can require about 500 megabytes (1/2 a Gigabyte) of memory for the operating system. This means having a laptop with 512 Megabytes of memory will impact on performance as the system will be paging memory to your hard disk and slow down processing of tasks and applications. Some experts even recommend 2 Gigabytes of memory as a minimum.

It is important to establish the maximum amount of memory the laptop can accommodate. Some laptops will accommodate a maximum of 2 Gigabytes while others will allow a maximum of 4 Gigabytes. Budget permitting, get a laptop that can be upgraded to 4 Gigabytes of memory. The more memory you have will allow for better multitasking with good performance.

The Hard Disk (HDD):

The hard disk capacity and speed are important features. This is where you will have all you installed software and your precious data (e.g. documents, photos, database etc...). The bigger the better as you will have enough room to store the information for ready access. Nowadays, 40 Gigabytes of hard disk space is considered a minimum. Consider that Windows Vista requires 15 Gigabytes or more of disk space to install. You should consider getting a laptop with about 80 Gigabytes or more disk space. This will allow enough room for storage.

It is important to ensure that you can upgrade your hard disk to a higher capacity if required. It is frustrating to run out of disk space and have to archive information on (for example) CDs or DVDs.

Some laptops will cater for 2 hard drives. Having 2 hard drives is advantageous as you can store your software on one and data on the other. This will improve performance as there will be fewer conflicts in I/O (disk reads and writes). Again your budget will influence what disk drive(s) you get.

Get the latest SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive(s) as opposed to the older ATA (IDE) hard drive(s). You will get better I/O performance. Try and get the 7200 RPM drives as opposed to the 5400 RPM drives (RPM = Revolution Per Minute). The faster spinning drives give better performance.

Note that Apple laptops are now using Intel processors. This means that if you have a hard disk with enough space you can install Apple Mac software and Windows software by partitioning your disk drive. This gives you the ability to swap between the two.

The Screen:

The screen is an important feature to consider. After all, this is what you will be staring at and you need to be happy with the size and resolution. You want a bright crisp screen with good viewing angles especially for things like photos etc...

Make sure the screen is an Active Matrix (TFT) one and not Passive Matrix. Most laptops today come with a TFT screen. The screen resolution (number of pixels) is also important. At a minimum choose a screen with 1024 X 768 pixels which is OK for text viewing. However for more desktop space go for 1400x1050 or 1600x1200. My laptop has 1400X1050 as a maximum. Go and look at different screens at a local computer or electronics store to figure out what size and resolution you prefer. Make sure that you can see the details displayed at a fairly wide diagonal angle.

The screen size will also influence the physical size (footprint) of your laptop. The screen does contribute significantly to the price of a laptop. Go for the best your budget allows.

Other Features:

Mobile computing: Ideally you want a laptop with built in wireless networking (WIFI) and Bluetooth. This will allow you to be truly mobile and connect to trusted networks at airports etc... Alternatively you can buy separate wireless/Bluetooth modules which can plug in to USB ports. However, these may be more difficult to setup.

You may also want to have a built in modem interface for dial up via telephone lines for networking and accessing the web.

You may want to connect to a LAN via cable interface (e.g. at work). For this your laptop should be equipped with an RJ45 connection port with a built in network card.

External Devices: You will want to connect a mouse, printer, memory stick, external portable disk drive (for backups?) or scanner to your laptop. This is usually via USB ports. Make sure the USB ports are USB 2.0 and not USB 1.0. USB 2.0 is dramatically faster than USB 1.0. You should consider at least 2 to 3 USB ports.

You may want a digital media slot for reading digital camera cards. This can also be achieved with an external digital media reader via USB connection.

You may also want Express Card Slots (PCMCIA) where you can use external storage cards (some latest cards will be able to store up to 16 Gigabytes of information). The same slots can also be used for cellular phone network modems which allow you to network via the cellular phone networks.

Microphone and audio jacks are also useful as you may want to use headphones for listening to music or headphones with built in microphone for voice communication over the internet.

A 1394 port can also be useful to connect to IEEE 1394 equipment such as camcorders.

An S-Video-out jack is also useful to connect to S-Video devices such as a television, VCR, camcorder, overhead projector, or video capture card.

Reading and writing CDs and DVDs: You will want a built in CD/DVD drive. There are 2 kinds, those that can read and write CDs and only read DVDs and those that can read and write both CDs and DVDs. For those that can write DVDs there are 2 kinds, those that write single layer DVDs (about 4 Gigabytes of information) and those that can write single and double layer DVDs (about 8 Gigabytes of information). CDs and DVDs are cheap and great to archive information, backup information or distribute information (music, software, photos, and videos).

The video card/processor: This is the card/processor that is supplied with your laptop and drives the display on your screen. I do not have much knowledge on this and I am not into playing computer games. However, if you are going to play video games or use graphic intensive applications, do your homework and research to find the video card/processor most suited to your needs. Some people have been disappointed with their laptops because the video features supplied were not giving them the performance they expected. There are 2 kinds of video cards/processors, the integrated one and the dedicated one. The integrated one is built into the motherboard and shares resources such as memory. The dedicated one is separate and has its own memory. From what I understand, the dedicated ones give much better performance but at an extra cost and more demands on the cooling system and the battery. The video card/processor is not usually upgradeable in laptops. This means that your choice is very important as you probably will not be able to change your video card/processor for a better one.

I hope this information has been useful to you.

Refurbished Laptops Make a Great Second Computer

By M Johnson

The vast majority of people who own a single computer own a desktop system. That is great. With that you can do homework, business, get on the internet and a whole bunch of other applications. The problem is only one person can do that at a time. That presents a serious issue if several household members need to use it at one time. Now a cheap and inexpensive way to get rid of that problem is refurbished laptops.

Refurbished laptops are considerably less than a new notebook computer and the best part is it is easier than ever to hook up a home network. Imagine if you are online and somebody else has things to do too. You can either try and work out a schedule, or simply purchase a cheap laptop computer and save yourself the hassle. Through wireless technology you can have one internet connection (via cable or DSL broadband) and even share one printer. Isn't that awesome!

Now you and whomever else can do what they have to do and no one has to wait. Your time is precious and most of us do not have a lot of it to spare. Easily add another computer and you will not have to worry about space. A laptop computer unit will not clutter up your room. In fact they are no larger than an average three ring binder. Stores anywhere and you can take them anywhere you go because most of them weigh between four and eight pounds.

Right now we have learned that notebook computers save space, time, and easily connect to a network. Now let us get to the best part. The cost. Refurbished laptops are about half the cost of a new one. They are proven reliable, otherwise they are put in the trash. Great for the kids, spouse, or anyone that wants added convenience in his or her life.

Here is how a refurbished notebook computer is born:

1) Customer buys new laptop computer
2) Customer returns it for any number of reasons usually within 90 days
3) The unit cannot be sold as new and it is sent back to the manufacturer
4) They then repair and replace anything that is necessary after testing it
5) The laptop is tested again to make sure it works like new and it is resold

Not all retailers sell factory reconditioned laptops though. They decide to do it themselves. Better performance is proven when a highly skilled professional does the refurbishing. They are more up to date and have current software and hardware applications, so you are basically getting a notebook with only a few miles on it.

Everyone can benefit from an added computer in the house. You can take your time and do what you need without having to squeeze time in. Thanks to modern technology refurbished laptops are just as good as new, but with one good twist- they are cheaper. Refurbished notebook computers are here to stay because they are proven reliable and a great alternative to the high cost of new equipment.

Online Crazy Deals offers factory refurbished laptops to assure the highest quality.

Buy A Laptop Computer Online And Get The Best Deals

By M Johnson

There is a reason the internet is still working and growing at a rapid rate. It is simply the best place to get a great deal on just about everything. You can buy a laptop computer online and easily save 25% to 60% off retail price. How can this be? Online companies do not have the overhead a regular store has, thus passing the savings onto the consumer!

Thanks to ever advancing technology buying online is safer than ever. Websites install encrypting security technology to help assure a privacy safe transaction. The information given from the consumer to the merchant is scrambled, so no one can read it. On secure websites you will notice a little "lock" in the lower right side of the screen. Another clue if a website is secure, upon ordering the URL address will start with "https//". This is a reassurance to consumers that the site is secure.

Choosing which laptop PC to buy online is a whole other subject. It is best to stay with the companies with proven technology such as IBM, Dell, HP, Toshiba and the other big name brands. These companies have the best reputations for producing great notebook computers.

The best part about shopping online is how easy it is to view all the products without having to go from store to store. Wasting gas and time and energy. Through the internet, it is also very easy to buy. Most e-commerce sites accept many forms of payment. Major credit cards and even Paypal. This too assures a secure purchase because they also have security techniques in place to prevent fraud.

One of the best reasons to buy a laptop computer online remains the deal. Typical computer users update equipment about once every two years because of the ever changing technical world. This could get expensive, but what they know more than the average consumer is buying online is cheaper. A lot cheaper.

Many options are open to the PC user when it comes to purchasing a new notebook. One could buy a new notebook PC, or to save even more money buying refurbished laptops is a great alternative. Computers can be reconditioned fairly easily with great success. Used laptops are brought back to original working condition by replacing, or repairing old parts. This is very popular because laptops really can last a long time with few problems.

No matter what PC is best for you, an excellent cost saving option for purchasing mobile computers is to buy online. Get the best deal and save time and energy while doing it.

Online Crazy Deals is a safe shopping site offering the best in computer and mobile technology.

Laptop Computer Stand - Adding Comfort and Convenience

By Rob Buenaventura

Working on a laptop is not quite as comfortable for most as working in front of a regular desktop computer. There is often more strain as you are seated in a manner that isn’t as conducive to typing. The truth is that most people choose a laptop for convenience though and not for comfort. For this reason we are seeing more and more laptop stands hit the market that offer more comfort and convenience to using your laptop no matter what the reason.

Laptop stands are better than desks as they are rather easy to maneuver or portable, just as the laptop is. This means that you can generally move your stand and your laptop from room to room throughout the house or in your yard as the need or fancy arises. Even better in my opinion is the fact that laptop stands fold for easy storage. This makes them an excellent choice for those with limited space such as dorm rooms or apartments.

Laptop stands are designed to be used with a wide variety of chairs. This means that you can use them comfortably from your rocking chair, lounge chair, or the comfort of your sofa. Many people also love the fact that you can easily swivel many laptop stands in order to show your work or the great website you just discovered to others in the room.

These stands, much like the laptops are designed to occupy less space. When you are not using your stand you can fold it and put it away in order to free up more floor space within your room. You can easily unfold your stand when the time comes and it is once again needed as well. Most people find them to be quite ergonomic and easy to use as well. This makes work and/or play much more comfortable. Higher end laptop stands will also have room for plugging in peripherals, cell phones, hubs, and routers in addition to holding your laptop.

You can find laptop stands in many different styles and designs that will actually suit the décor of your room if you decide not to tuck it away when not in use. More importantly these laptop stands, even the high-end variety, are surprisingly affordable for consumers.
Because laptop stands are so versatile you can use them in almost any area of your home. It is even possible to adjust the height so that you can use your laptop while working out on the treadmill. If nothing else you can catch streaming news and video of your favorite television shows, movies, or news programs.

In Search Of The Ultimate Gaming Laptop

By Titus Hoskins

Gaming technology is developing at a blistering pace.
Extremely fast. White knuckle fast. So fast it is very
hard to keep track of all the latest innovations even
for the most die-hard gaming enthusiast.

Gaming laptops are getting faster, sleeker and more
powerful even as you read this. There has been a rapid
deployment of gaming and laptop technology recently...
dual core, dual graphics, dual hard drives... and the
list keeps growing.

Larger screens are another major improvement with 19
and even 20 inch displays coming on stream, offering us
a greater viewing area and more enjoyment.

With all these changes taking place in the gaming sector,
where can you find the ultimate gaming laptop, the most
powerful motherboard of all extreme machines? The best
gaming performance for the money?

Where to look? Where to start the search?

Every gamer can tell you the heart of any gaming laptop
is the graphics card. You must get the most powerful
graphics or GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) if you want
your gaming system to perform to the max.

Now everything is coming up dual!

If one card is good, two must be better! You can now get
gaming systems with twin or dual graphics with over a Gig
of memory. You must also have a way to handle all this
power so look for PCI-Express with SLI (Scalable Link
Interface) systems.

Don't skimp your pennies here, try to get the best Graphics
possible, a lot of gamers go for the high end GPUs such
as ATI Mobility Radeon or NVIDIA GeForce Go series. Usually
the higher the number the better performance it will deliver.

Know Your RAM

RAM is very important in a gaming laptop mainly because,
as with any computer, RAM will largely determine how fast
it will perform. Same as with your graphics card, go for
the highest RAM possible. Know the difference between
ordinary RAM and Video RAM. The latter is very important
for running and getting full enjoyment out of your extreme
gaming laptop.

Helping to speed everything up, high end gaming laptops
now come with dual core processors, most gamers go for
Intel or AMD processors. Go with a SATA (Serial Advanced
Technology Attachment) hard drive with the highest storage
and speed you can afford.

If Money Is No Object

If you want the ultimate gaming laptop you will probably
have to pay a hefty price for top performance. The ultimate
gaming laptop is really a luxury item where price is never
much of a consideration in the first place. For those lucky
few where money is no object (These creatures do roam the
earth I am told!), searching out the best laptop money can
buy must be a pleasant task.

Your hunt would no doubt begin with some of the top gaming
brands such as Alienware (now owned by Dell), Voodoo (now a
part of HP) and Rock Direct, a UK Laptop Company.

Let's face it, these high end gaming laptop manufacturers
are mainly selling style and looks at a premium price. Many
people criticize this as style over substance, most of these
companies are using the same gaming components shipped in
from Taiwan and assembling them into neat little gaming
(marketing) packages.

But we are talking about luxury items here, if truth be
told how many people would buy a Ferrari if it looked like
a Model T? If you're looking for the ultimate gaming machine,
you will probably want the looks too? It's a package deal.
You can't have Paris without a Hilton!

New Alienware ALX

Some of the latest gaming models have to be seen to be
believed. The new Alienware ALX Series should be on your
list if you're looking for the ultimate gaming machine.
Don't dismiss the latest Dell XPS M1710 laptop, which
replaces the current XPS M170.

You should also cast your eye back to the mother country,
Rock Direct in the UK has always been an innovator when it
comes to gaming laptops. They were one of the first makers
to ship Dual Core laptops. Their Xtreme SL Pro comes highly
rated with twin AMD Turion 64 TL-60 (2GHz) processors and
dual NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX 512MB graphics cards via
PCI-Express with SLI.

Gamers will be taking note of the new DirectX 10 Znote
6625WD from Zepto. Another company in Europe who is
taking the lead by introducing DirectX 10 gaming which
will be powered by Santa Rosa, Intel's 4th generation
Centrino Pro platform. Other vendors closer to home,
are featuring this new platform such as HP's Pavilion
dv6500t.

Other Brands

Of course, you must not forget many of the other major
laptop companies which produce high performance machines
such as the Apple's MacBook Pro series and the HP's Pavilion
line. These shouldn't be ignored in your search for the
ultimate gaming machine.

Actually the search for the ultimate gaming laptop is
rather pointless, wait two minutes after you have purchased
your prized machine and there will probably be something
new that will outperform it. Your best bet is to try to
buy a machine that you can easily up-grade.

Besides, most gamers are an independent and stubborn lot,
so regardless of what the experts or the benchmarks say,
any gaming notebook they finally do buy will be their
ultimate gaming laptop. If not in fact, then at least
in their own minds and in the end that's all that really
matters!

Refurbished Laptops for Students - Do They Make Sense?

By Grant Price III

As a former college student, I remember the chief complaint that my friends and I had- which was lack of funds. Trekking to the computer lab late at night was not only inconvenient, but, (especially for my female friends), not the safest thing in the world to have to do. Having my own laptop computer would make things alot simpler, but should I finance a laptop using money I didn’t have, or should I look at purchasing refurbished?

In order for me to make a wise decision, I stepped through a logical process:

1. What activities will I be using this laptop for?

2. What will I need to do to make this laptop integrate with the on campus network?

3. What “bells and whistles” do I want, and can I afford them.

Using budget as the primary concern, a refurbished laptop would make sense. First of all, most students needs are basic - Internet for research, Microsoft Office,(or equivalent), for papers and projects, and email to stay connected to friends. Everything else is in essence a “bell and whistle” that definately adds to the experience, but doesn’t necessarily tie in to my budget.

Another concern is the great specials going on at the major electronics superstores. Alot of these prices come close to the prices of refurbished laptop computers, however, upon closer inspection most “deals” are based on mail in rebates. Waiting 6-8 weeks for $200.00 or more of my much- needed cash is not high on my list of priorities right now.

Looking at the situation, a refurbished business class notebook was right for me. When you think about it, it makes sense. Most business class notebooks focus on doing the basics well while throwing in a couple of bells an whistles such as a DVD drive or a firewire port here and there. They almost certainly are capable of connecting to most any network and aren’t so heavy as to not be portable.

If I were to choose today, I might look at a refurbished Dell latitude D600 which retails for $489.00. or a refurbished IBM Thinkpad R40 which retails for an even cheaper $469.00 Both offer DVD Rom, (in the case of the D600, CDRW as well), Microsoft Windows XP Professional, all required ports, and in the case of the R40, a 15″ screen, ( nice for using my laptop as a portable entertainment station.)

All in all, there are plenty of refurbished options for students which will make campus life a little richer, and ligher on the pocket.

Dump Your Desktop And Get One of These

By Elizabeth Lord

The HP Pavilion dv9000t laptop has arrived and it comes packing plenty of punch. With the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor, dual 100GB hard drives, 17 inch glossy display, and to top it all off, a HD-DVD drive that plays the latest high definition movies, though not at the highest resolutions.

This 7.8-pound HP notebook not only has power, but it looks good as well. With a shiny black finish on the outside and silver on the inside, this system can handle just about anything from multitasking office work to music, photos and playing DVDs. The 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor, has no problem doing all of the above simultaneously, without any glitches to audio or video.

Navigating around the dv9000t is very easy. The large touch pad makes for easy scrolling, and the scroll bar makes scanning large documents a breeze. The QuickPlay multimedia buttons activate the DVD player and multimedia features, as well as starting or stopping movies or music.

Sound from the Altec Lansing speakers was very clear coming through, but cranking the volume right up made the sound a bit fuzzy, with the best option being to stick around the midrange for the best sound.

This HP computer comes with a 1.3-megapixel webcam that delivered good quality pictures, but had some trouble with videoconferencing and live video coming through a bit blurry.

The dv9000t has a 2.16-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor that delivers good performance without being stunning. Combined with a Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card with 256MB of video memory, this system is a very solid performer.

Battery life was pretty good at 2 hours and 40 minutes with the Wi-Fi on. The wireless networking performed strongly with 13.4 Mbps at 15 feet, and 11.5 Mbps at 50 feet. There are also plenty of ports to this system, with four USB ports, FireWire, VGA, S-Video out, two headphone ports and a mic port.

There is a nice amount of software that comes with this system, including Corel Paint Shop Pro X, HP’s QuickPlay Direct 2.1, Photosmart Premier 6.0, Intuit Quicken New User Edition 2006, Microsoft Office Trial 2003, Money 2006 and Muvee autoProducer DVD edition with Burning 5. There is also a trial version of Norton Internet Security 2006. There is the standard one year warranty with this machine, and one year of 24/7 toll free tech support, as well as email assistance and real time chat online.

Overall, this system is a good desktop replacement with HD-DVD. Along with the built in webcam, the QuickPlay functions and affordable price, the HP Pavilion 9000t will not let you down.

How To Choose The Best Student Laptop?

By Titus Hoskins

Merchants are singing those three magic words again,
'Back to School' and the fallout is everywhere!

Just as you're getting your deep dark pre-cancerous tan
going -- you hear those words -- and it spells the end
of summer. Once again we are bombarded with advertising,
featuring the latest in 'teen ware' 'school ware' and
'metal detector ware'. Kidding!

Is it just me or does it seem this year there is a lot
more 'Back to School' advertising for notebooks and laptops?
They seem to be everywhere... on TV, radio, and online.

Laptop ads are everywhere. Why is this?

Well, notebooks have come down in price, they have become
more affordable, even for the modest student. Laptops have
also come down in size, making them ideal for that school
napsack, or dormroom. They have also become tougher
and sturdier... better equipped to meet the hard/wear/tear
that students give it.

With notebook technology changing every two years or
so; notebooks can now handle most tasks students throw
their way. These advanced notebooks can do the job. They also
present a much stronger entertainment value to students, they
can handle better graphics and gaming, but most students
try to keep parents in the dark about this factor as they
plead for a new laptop for college or school. All this
pleading is further fueling the demand for laptops.

Then there is a little thing called the Internet. Throw
in a wireless connection and the student laptop is coming
into its own. Big Time!

The Internet has become a second teacher/parent/counselor
to most students. God help us all! But it has also become
a priceless source of the collective knowledge on this planet;
frightening but true. The Internet is an invaluable source of
knowledge for any high school/college student.

Not having ready access to all this knowledge and information
will put any student at a disadvantage with his peers.
It's a very competitive world, in high school, in college and
in the future job market; every student should have an even
playing field.

That's where the little notebook computer enters stage right!

Laptops or notebooks have quickly become a school necessity.
When? How? Why?...

It's the perfect learning tool for students:

* very portable, you can carry them anywhere, class, cafe,
dorm, home...

* very convenient, you can take notes in class, type up assignments, print assignments, communicate home, access the Internet...

* very tough, many newer notebooks are designed to withstand a good pounding and keep on computing, ruggerized for sturdy use...

* very powerful, notebooks or laptops are catching up to their desktop cousins in computing speed, hard drive storage and
performance...

* very affordable, prices have dropped and are falling even further, laptops are now outselling desktop PCs so this price will drop even further, there's a whole slew of used and refurbished laptops hitting the market...

If you're a parent, student, or guardian; here are some of the factors you should consider when buying the best student laptop or notebook:

* size, it must be small, lightweight and very portable, fit comfortably under the arm or in that backpack

* sturdy, it must be tough, sturdy, ruggerized, and able to take more than one hard knock because students are students

* connections, wireless connections should be offered, the Internet is such a valuable tool in itself - a student should be able to access it anywhere. Most notebooks have these connections but check -- a printer port, a 56Kbps-modem, a VGA port for an external monitor, and should have at least one USB port for external keyboard/mouse, digital cameras, drives, and MP3 players

* technical specs, it should have enough RAM, storage space (hard drive) and computing speed to do any job the student can throw at it

* battery life, make sure your student notebook has a reasonable battery life, 5 hours or more

* price, it should be reasonably priced, refurbished laptops may be an option for those on a strict budget

However, some words of wisdom, students or parents shouldn't skimp
too much -- if you're spending 10's of thousands on an education, you
should also provide for the best possible equipment in the form of a sturdy,

New Laptop Technology You Need To Know (Before Buying Your Next Laptop)

By Titus Hoskins

Laptop or notebook computer technology is advancing at
a blistering speed. Ferrari fast. So fast that by the time
you purchase your new laptop, it's probably already
obsolete or out of date. A sobering thought considering
the hefty prices you have to pay for a high-end laptop.

But laptop technology is changing so fast new innovations
are coming on stream as you read this article. There is a
whole new generation of notebook technology every two years
or less. Therefore, unless you buy or upgrade your laptop
each year you're falling behind what these sleek little
powerhouses can now deliver.

And unless you're already in Geek Heaven, keeping track
of all these new technologies and innovations can be
quite a chore. Figuring out the right Graphics chipset
that works best with the right CPU and the best Data buses
is a major feat. And now that everything is being
Doubled -- dual core, dual graphics -- it's entering
the realm where Einstein would be amused, even on a
bad hair day!

What's the ordinary laptop buyer to do?

What you really have to keep in mind are the outcomes
of all this new technology. Basically, these new
technologies have made laptops smaller, faster and more
powerful. With every new improvement the laptop is closing
the gap between its main rival -- the desktop computer.

Notebook computers are now out-selling desktops for
the first time in history. Laptops are replacing the
old desktop computer, whose days may just be numbered.
It won't be long before laptops are also out-performing
them as well.

Some major computer makers are taking note of this
trend towards more powerful, smaller computers.
Even the desktop computer is morphing! Just look at
the sleek design of the new Apple iMac G5, gone is the
bulky tower, in its place is a well designed desktop
computer that's almost a laptop!

For the ordinary computer user keeping abreast of
all these new technologies and inventions can be a
major chore if you're considering buying a laptop
in the next little while. As you approach the smiling
salesperson in your favorite tech store, here's a
few bits of new notebook technology you might want
to have in your possession so you won't look like a
complete neophyte. Hey, where technology is concerned,
we have all been there, done that.

In order for you to tech-proof your next laptop
purchase, here's a quick run down of some recent
Notebook Developments:

Sonoma Chipset

The new Sonoma Platform, Intel's next-generation Centrino
Chipset is already on the market. Members of the Sonoma
club are growing daily - Sony, IBM/Lenovo, BenQ, Dell,
Samsung, Acer, and Toshiba... another 80 or 90
'Sonoma-endowed' products will be released very shortly.

No doubt, it will become the Platform standard for many
high-end notebooks. Actually, it won't make or mean that
much difference to the ordinary Joe/Jane who just want a
notebook or laptop for web surfing, word processing and
e-mail. Notebooks with the Sonoma Platform will be just
a little bit faster and have a little better battery life.

But for Mobile Professionals and Notebook Fanatics (they
do exist)... there's a lot of good things delivered or
capable of being delivered with this new Centrino Chipset.
First, wireless connections will be easier with the integrated
tri-mode 802.11a/b/g, already dubbed by some as the
'wireless trinity'! This will make it easier to stay
connected no matter where you are.

Improved performance will be experienced because the
new Pentium M's have a 533MHz frontside bus, supported
with up to 2GB of DDR2 DRAM, Serial ATA Hard Drive, and
PCI Express, plus improved integrated graphics, including
Intel's Hi-Def Audio. All are possible with the Sonoma
Platform.

PCI Express

PCI(Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express is a new
standard for expansion cards that comes in different
versions. Presently, we have the x16 and x1 lanes, which
will be followed by x4 and x8 versions. It offers increased
bandwidth for example, x1 lane offers 500MB/sec instead of
just 133MB/sec for PCI.

All computers, including laptops have different buses,
(collection of wires) that transmit data from one component
to another.

Of course, in an ideal world, all the data in your computer
should move thru just one BUS - however, most experts agree
it's not likely to happen unless we start over and build a
computer system from scratch. For now we have to rely on
different internal buses to move the data around, the
PCI Express is a great improvement and will make your
laptop faster.

Graphics Card

These are always improving. A Graphics Card handles the
graphics or visuals on your notebook. If 3D graphics and
games is a pastime, you will want to buy the highest
quality system. Some of the higher end products are:
ATi Mobility Radeon 9800, X800, and FireGL V3200 or
Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator 900.

If you can, go with a NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 graphics
card or for the real game diehards - wait for the debut
of NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 that features NVIDIA's TurboCache
technology.

Gamers will be aware of NVIDIA SLI technology, ATI's
CrossFire and Hyperthreading. All new stuff that's
bringing the gaming experience up to a higher level of
perfection that would even be worthy of a Spielberg or
a Lucas Production. Not really, but it's getting there.

64 Bit Laptops

Most systems today run on the 32 Bit System. Keep in mind,
the major difference between a 32-bit and a 64-bit system
is the amount of memory that they support. Around 4 GB for
32-bit and 8 GB and up for the 64-bit. Right now -- Intel,
Apple, and AMD all offer 64-bit systems.

Do you need all this memory? No, for the average laptop
user it amounts to overkill. However, if you're interested
in gaming, desktop publishing, or the graphic arts you will
benefit from 64-bit technology.

Dual Core Notebooks

Two is better than one!

Dual core laptops are now on the market. The gaming industry
is the starting point for many of these advanced systems.
For example, the British Laptop maker Rockdirect now produces
Xtreme 64, a gaming laptop with AMD’s new dual core Athlon 64
X2 processor. This same laptop also sports the ATI Mobility
Radeon X800 XT graphics card that features 16 pixel pipelines,
an industry first for notebooks.

The major producers of dual-core chips are Intel and AMD.
The Intel dual-core processor has hyperthreading (HT), the
two cores are divided into four virtual CPU units. Is all this
needed? Again, if you're into heavy graphics or gaming, it's
something you should consider and explore further.

Built-in Cellular Modem

Most high-end laptops now come with an integrated
tri-mode 802.11a/b/g for wireless WI-FI connections.

Some recent models, like the Sony's New Ultra-Portable
VAIO VGN-T350P, are raising the bar; it has the world's
first 'Built-in Cellular Modem'. You can use your cell phone
to connect to the Internet. This may be a great advantage
since finding a 'Hot Spot' in some parts of the world can
still be difficult.

The Avant-Garde: LumiLED Display

Be on the look-out for LED monitors in the near future.
The brightness, colors and backlighting technology in LED
monitors will be quite different from LCD displays.

The Forerunner in this field is NEC's SpectraView LumiLED,
and will offer a much better image and color.
Keep your eyes peeled.

On the Horizon:

19 or 20 Inch Laptop Screens

There is a rumor, only a rumor, that Dell is coming out
with a 19-inch laptop in early 2006. There is also buzz
that LG-Philips has a 20-inch LCD panel which could easily
be used by laptop makers if they want to explore this
market area. Andre the giant will be pleased!

Conclusion

Of course, there are many more laptop innovations in
the pipeline but they're beyond the scope of this article.
Just keep all these new technological notebook changes in
mind when you're checking out your next laptop. Maybe,
just maybe, most of these won't already have been replaced
by something new by the time you buy your next laptop.
But don't bet your Google Stocks on it!
